PROGRAM FAQs
Our first Stagecraft and Technology cohort began training in July 2025 and graduated on December 19, 2025.
Applications are now open for our first Arts Administration program which will run from April-August 2026 and include 6 weeks of paid employment with New York Stage and Film at Marist University.
ETCA prepares students for meaningful careers in the performing arts through two distinct programs: Stagecraft and Technology and Arts Administration. The below FAQs apply to both programs.
To learn more about the job responsibilities for the roles we train and for more information on which ETCA program might be right for you, please visit our Glossary of Terms.
How long is the training program?
How much does the training program cost?
ETCA’s Arts Administration training program offers free tuition.
During training, students will have 6 weeks of paid employment with New York Stage & Film. Pay rate during the time at New York Stage & Film depends on the job each student is assigned, with a minimum rate of $18/hour.
Will online learning be an option?
The Arts Administration program is designed to be a hybrid program with both online and in-person learning.
The Stagecraft and Technology program is in-person learning only, as hands-on training is essential for these jobs.
Our approach in both programs emphasizes collaboration and real-world experience, which are critical in preparing you for a successful career in the arts.
What specific jobs and roles will I be trained to take on in the Arts Administration program?
All Arts Administration students are trained in Fundraising, Communications, and Company management. Please see our Glossary of Terms for more information on these roles and their responsibilities.
Will the class schedule and curriculum allow me to have a part-time or full-time job when in the program?
Yes. Classes will be held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:45 AM to 4 PM ET. This schedule is designed to allow for flexible employment opportunities outside of class hours. We focus on practical training with minimal reading or homework, enabling you to balance work and study effectively.
For the current Arts Administration program, you will also be employed at New York Stage & Film from June 30th through August and you will be provided with meals and housing at Marist University during this time.
Will there be paid opportunities for students while they complete the program?
Yes. Students typically have the chance to work at public events hosted at The Chance and at partner organizations for a minimum of $18/hour throughout the program.

What are you looking for when you review my application?
When reviewing your application, our evaluation is based on three key areas: Demonstration of Interest, Alignment with Our Values and Mission, and Student Readiness or Preparedness.

Your application should reflect your connection to these values and how ETCA aligns with your aspirations and experiences.
- Student Readiness or Preparedness: We will assess if you’ve demonstrated an understanding of the program’s commitment and logistics. Ensure you’ve addressed any logistical questions, shared transparently any barriers, and conveyed your ability to manage the program requirements.
Who will have access to my application materials?
Your application will be reviewed by our Training Center Leadership team, which currently includes our Co-Founders and the Student Services Advisor. Any personal information you provide will be kept confidential.
How will Empire Training Center for the Arts achieve its mission of providing opportunities to underrepresented communities in this program?
ETCA accomplishes our mission through organizational and educational partnerships, diverse faculty, and grassroots recruitment. Our shorter training program, trust-based sliding scale tuition model, and commitment to employment opportunities were developed to specifically eliminate known barriers to quality arts training. Our goal is to ensure that anyone in Poughkeepsie and the surrounding geographic locations has access to our programs and the opportunity to build a career in the arts.
What are the facilities like at The Chance?
In-person training takes place in The Chance Theater and the adjacent building, The Loft. The Loft hosts a Media Lab/Classroom and a Student Lounge with seating, lockers and a mini kitchen (microwave, refrigerator, electric kettle, water). Wi-Fi is available in both buildings, and students can utilize these spaces between classes, with schedules provided at the start of the program.
Is The Chance fully ADA accessible?
As a historic venue, The Chance is currently not wheelchair accessible. However, we are committed to being ADA compliant at the completion of The Chance’s future full renovation. If you have any accessibility questions, please contact us at info@empirearts.org.
