ETCA prepares students for meaningful careers in the performing arts through two distinct programs: Stagecraft and Technology and Arts Administration. The below FAQs apply to both programs.

ETCA proudly offers a trust-based sliding scale tuition model. The full program value is $3,500, and during your application process, you will be asked to indicate your preferred tuition rate and payment plan.

Your tuition needs will be discussed in your initial application. If you progress to the in-person workshop, you will have a one-on-one conversation with a member of our Student Services team to finalize your tuition plan before securing your spot in the program.

This program is in-person learning only, as hands-on training is essential in vocational education. Our approach emphasizes collaboration and real-world experience, which are critical in preparing you for a successful career in the arts.

Yes, you can! Classes will be held at The Chance on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM EST. This schedule is designed to allow for flexible employment opportunities outside of class hours. We focus on practical training with minimal reading or homework, enabling you to balance work and study effectively.

Absolutely! Students will have the chance to work at public events hosted at The Chance for $18/hour throughout the program.

Training will take place in The Chance Theater and the adjacent building, The LoftThere will be a Student Lounge and a Media Lab/Classroom. The Student Lounge will feature seating, lockers and a mini kitchen (microwave, coffee, refrigerator, and water cooler). Wi-Fi will be available in both buildings, and students can utilize these spaces between classes, with schedules provided at the start of the program.

As a historic venue, The Chance is currently not wheelchair accessible. However, we are committed to being ADA compliant at the completion of The Chance’s full renovation. If you have any accessibility questions, please contact us at info@empirearts.org.

STAGECRAFT AND TECHNOLOGY
APPLICATION FAQs

Applications for ETCA’s Stagecraft and Technology program open on Friday, November 22. The below FAQs apply to the current application process for the Stagecraft and Technology cycle beginning in 2025. 

All of our Stagecraft and Technology students will be trained to act as Stagehands, Audio Technicians, and Video Technicians by the end of the program.  Please see our Glossary of Terms for more information on these roles and their responsibilities.

When reviewing your application, our evaluation is based on three key areas: Demonstration of Interest, Alignment with Our Values and Mission, and Student Readiness or Preparedness.  

  • Demonstration of Interest:  We want to see that you’ve thoughtfully articulated why you’re drawn to Empire Training Center for the Arts (ETCA). Be specific about what excites you about the program and how it aligns with your professional goals. 
  • Alignment with Our Values and Mission: We look for candidates who resonate with ETCA’s values of Curiosity, Problem-Solving, and Collaboration, and who connect with our mission. Your application should reflect your connection to these values and how ETCA aligns with your aspirations and experiences. 
  • Student Readiness or Preparedness: We will assess if you’ve demonstrated an understanding of the program’s commitment and logistics. Ensure you’ve addressed any logistical questions, shared transparently any barriers, and conveyed your ability to manage the program requirements. 

 

 ETCA strives to accomplish our mission through organizational and educational partnerships, diverse faculty, and grassroots recruitmentOur shorter training program, trust-based sliding scale tuition model, and commitment to employment opportunities were developed to specifically eliminate known barriers to quality arts training. Our goal is to ensure that anyone in Poughkeepsie and the surrounding geographic locations has access to our programs and the opportunity to build a career in the arts. 

For 2025, ETCA requires that all prospective students are 18+ when they begin the program and have received their high school diploma or GED. 

We anticipate classes will start in April 2025 and run through January 2026.

Due to the nature of the curriculum, the Stagecraft and Technology and Arts Administration programs will run on a staggered schedule.  Though applications for the first Arts Administration cohort are not yet open, we are happy to answer any questionsEmail info@empirearts.org and an ETCA staff member will set up a time to speak with you.  

Your application will be reviewed by our Training Center Leadership team, which currently includes our Co-Founders and the Student Services Advisor. Any personal information you provide will be kept confidential.

AbsolutelyWe will be hosting an open house at The Chance Theater on Saturday, January 18 from 12pm – 3pm ET, where you may fill out a paper application and/or discuss any details about the program with the ETCA team in person. Also, the final step of the application process will be an onsite workshop where all prospective students will receive a tour of the facility.
